Electrical work in your home is perhaps one of the most important jobs to get right. A good electrician will ensure that your home's electrical system is not only reliable but is also safe. Poor electrical work can cause fires and possibly electric shocks, so always hire a licensed electrician, and never consider doing electrical work yourself, with the exception of changing light globes and resetting safety switches (although if a switch is being tripped regularly you will need to have your wiring checked by an electrician). Finding a reliable licensed electrician involves sourcing possible tradespeople, then narrowing the list down to someone who you can work harmoniously with.

Licensed electricians

In order to legally practise as an electrician in Australia, a tradesperson must be registered with the state that they are working in. Electricians must be trained and have completed testing and work experience before they can be licensed with their State or Territory. The potentially dangerous nature of the work they undertake is the reason for this level of regulation of electricians in Australia.

How to choose an electrician

It is important to choose an electrician who you can trust with the safety of your home and family. These tips will help you find someone who you will feel comfortable with:

  • To find a list of possible electricians, ask friends, family and workmates for recommendations, check web listings or referral services, or simply check the Yellow Pages for licensed electricians in your area
  • Ensure that the electrician has a current license and current insurance. Don't feel afraid to check this if you are in any doubt, or simply as a matter of course
  • Client references from an electrician you are considering should be followed up
  • Check that there have been no complaints against the electrician with the Office of Fair Trading.
  • Organise to get a quote for the work, but ensure first that it is free. Avoid using an electrician who will not explain the job to you in simple terms, as jargon can be used to justify a more expensive price or poor knowledge
  • Ensure that any quotes are signed, as a verbal agreement cannot be enforced
  • Pay only part of the price up front, and wait to pay the rest until the job is completed satisfactorily
  • Ask any questions that you may have up front, and ensure that the person you are considering is happy to answer these satisfactorily

Electricians: Final tips

The nature of electrical work requires that it is done by someone who is qualified, experienced and reliable, as electricity is simply too potentially dangerous to be taken lightly. By asking for a reference from a reliable acquaintance, checking electricians' qualifications and insurance and getting a written quote, you will be protecting yourself and your family from poor quality work, and ensuring that your home remains safe.
